Local Author Series
Your Sherrard Public Library is fortunate to be selected as one of the few locations local authors will schedule monthly events in conjunction
with the Midwest Writers Center. Your library will host an author each month at which time they will discuss and autograph copies of their
books. The following authors are scheduled for the winter quarter:

Larry Riney, Hell Gate of the Mississippi
Mr. Riney is a member of the Midwest Writing Center and lives in Geneseo. He has had a long fascination with the story of the Effie Afton
Trial, and how it influenced this area. His book is nominated for a 2008 Benjamin F. Shambaugh Award.
Synopsis: For fifteen days in September, 1857, the attention of both the United States and Europe turned to a rundown Chicago courtroom. The
steamboat Effie Afton had crashed into a pier of the first railroad bridge thrown across the Mississippi River at Rock Island, Illinois. The con-
troversial lawsuit that followed promised to change the economy and the social fabric of the vast Mississippi River Valley. Some of the sharpest
legal minds practicing in what was called at that time to Far West tried the test case. One of those lawyers was Abraham Lincoln. Hell Gate
of the Mississippi puts you in the jury box for an up-close, firsthand look at this highly charged trial.

Synopsis: The Italian lifeguard, Roberto, rescues a comatose girl from the bone-chilling waters of the North Atlantic. Who is she? Pauper or
heiress? A Swedish maid or her employer's daughter? The author deals fictitiously with the aftermath of the Titanic tragedy, and how it affect-
ed the lives of two survivors. Author, Sally John says, "I enjoyed the feel of life in 1912, the sense of a bygone era, the sweetness of romance
the backdrop of historical facts."

DON WOOTEN, And Another Thing......
Quad Citians recognize not only Don's name but his voice. Don's career began in 1950 at KWPC AM in Muscatine, then jumped to WHBF-
TV in Rock Island. Many have listened to Don when he was a weatherman and later at WVIK public radio. He is also a former Illinois Senator
(serving 8 years). Don also founded the classical theater group called Genesius Guild that performs in Lincoln Park, Rock Island every sum-
mer. Don started writing a weekly column for the Rock Island Argus at the beginning of 1986. Ten years later it was picked up by the Moline
Dispatch and continues to appear on Sundays in both newspapers.
Synopsis: And Another Thing...... is a collection of Don's columns written over many years. As Don notes in his opening comments (the
"Apologia"), he has written over 1,100 columns and feels that there was much to be gained by repeating, amending, supplementing...or simply
recycling! Don travels through columns about the actual act of writing, the acquiring and `training' of Norwegian Elkhounds, class reunions,
the Crazy Eight...and many more memories of recent times.
Mark your calendars and plan to attend "Local Authors Night" at your Sherrard Public Library.
