Library Clerk I


Hours: 10 - 13.5 hours per week
Tuesday: 2-7 PM
Friday: 12-5 PM
Saturday (every other): 8:30 AM - 12 PM


Please note: this is not a seasonal position.

The Circulation Clerk is responsible for providing front desk services and care of library materials with professionalism, helpfulness, and organization. The Circulation Clerk is instrumental in realizing the Library’s mission, vision, and long-term goals as it pertains to customer interactions, circulation functions, and maintaining the accessibility of library collections. Circulation Clerks should be friendly, professional, and accurate.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Welcomes and interacts with customers in a professional and helpful manner; assist with customer inquiries in-person, as well as via telephone and computer; and, resolves minor problems with consideration of Library policy and procedure.
  • Performs circulation functions using integrated library software; promotes Library’s activities and services during customer interactions; and, performs reader’s advisory services.
  • Shelves library materials accurately according to library classification systems; engages in care of library collection, including processing, mending, and cleaning materials; reviews shelves for accuracy and condition; and, maintains neat and orderly appearance of library, including sanitizing public areas, facing shelves, cleaning high-touch surfaces, etc.
  • Provides supervision of visitors, as well as library buildings and property, according to Library’s risk management plans.
  • Communicates supply and equipment needs, complex customer inquiries, or potential problems to appropriate management.
  • Follows Library’s policies and procedures as applicable to all work.
  • Performs other duties required.


Supervision:

The Circulation Clerk I is hired and supervised by the Library Director, who provides a formal review on annual basis. The Circulation Clerk is also subject to supervision by library management.

Knowledge and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of customer service principles
  • Ability to interact with customers with professionalism, patience, and attention to detail
  • Ability to perform responsibilities with positivity, critical thinking, and accuracy
  • Ability to maintain positive working relationship with library management, co-workers, and public
  • Ability to adapt to new library policies, procedures, activities, and goals
  • Ability to sort materials by library classification systems
